สาวตฺถี ฯ ตตฺร โข ฯ จตสฺโส อิมา ภิกฺขเว นาคโยนิโย ฯ กตมา จตสฺโส ฯ อณฺฑชา นาคา ชลาพุชา นาคา สํเสทชา นาคา อุปปาติกา นาคา ฯ อิมา โข ภิกฺขเว จตสฺโส นาคโยนิโยติ ฯ
พระนครสาวัตถี. ณ ที่นั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสว่า ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายกำเนิดของนาค ๔ จำพวกนี้. ๔ จำพวกเป็นไฉน? คือ นาคที่เป็นอัณฑชะ เกิดในไข่ ๑ นาคที่เป็นชลาพุชะ เกิดในครรภ์ ๑ นาคที่เป็นสังเสทชะ เกิดในเถ้าไคล ๑ นาคที่เป็นอุปปาติกะ เกิดผุดขึ้น ๑. ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย กำเนิดของนาค ๔ จำพวกนี้แล. จบ สูตรที่ ๑.
เรื่องเกิดขึ้นที่กรุงสาวัตถี พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า “ภิกษุทั้งหลาย กำเนิดของนาค ๔ ประเภทนี้ กำเนิดของนาค ๔ ประเภท อะไรบ้าง คือ ๑. นาคที่เป็นอัณฑชะ (เกิดในไข่) ๒. นาคที่เป็นชลาพุชะ (เกิดในครรภ์) ๓. นาคที่เป็นสังเสทชะ (เกิดในเถ้าไคลหรือที่ชื้นแฉะ) ๔. นาคที่เป็นโอปปาติกะ (เกิดผุดขึ้น) ภิกษุทั้งหลาย กำเนิดของนาค ๔ ประเภทนี้” สุทธิกสูตรที่ ๑ จบ
