ข้าพเจ้าได้สดับมาอย่างนี้ สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระเชตวัน อารามของ อนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตกรุงสาวัตถี ณ ที่นั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคได้รับสั่งเรียกภิกษุทั้งหลายมาตรัสว่า “ภิกษุทั้งหลาย” ภิกษุเหล่านั้นทูลรับสนองพระดำรัสแล้วพระผู้มีพระภาคจึงได้ตรัสเรื่องนี้ว่า “ภิกษุทั้งหลาย มีสมณพราหมณ์พวกหนึ่งกำหนดขันธ์(สรรพสิ่ง)ส่วนอนาคต มีความเห็นคล้อยตามขันธ์ส่วนอนาคต ปรารภขันธ์ส่วนอนาคต ประกาศวาทะแสดงทิฏฐิต่างๆ คือ สมณพราหมณ์พวกหนึ่งประกาศอย่างนี้ว่า ‘อัตตาที่มีสัญญา ยั่งยืนหลังจากตายแล้ว‘ @เชิงอรรถ : @ ดูเทียบข้อ ๙ (เทวทหสูตร) หน้า ๑๒-๑๔ ในเล่มนี้ @ ทิฏฐินี้เรียกว่า สัญญีวาทะ (ลัทธิที่ถือว่าหลังจากตายแล้ว อัตตามีสัญญา) มี ๑๖ ลัทธิ ดูเทียบ@ที.สี.
