๘. หิริสูตร ว่าด้วยหิริ
หิรินิเสโธ ปุริโส โกจิ โลกสฺมิ วิชฺชติ โย นิทฺทํ อปโพเธติ อสฺโส ภโทฺร กสามิวาติ ฯ
บุรุษที่เกียดกันอกุศลธรรมด้วยหิริ ได้มีอยู่น้อยคนในโลก ภิกษุใดบรรเทาความหลับเหมือนม้าดีหลบแส้ ภิกษุนั้นมีอยู่ น้อยรูปในโลก ฯ
เทวดากล่าวว่า คนผู้กีดกัน(อกุศลธรรม)ได้ด้วยหิริ มีอยู่น้อยในโลก ภิกษุใดหลบหลีกนินทาได้ ตื่นตัวอยู่ เหมือนม้าชั้นดีหลบแส้ได้ ภิกษุเช่นนั้นมีอยู่น้อย พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ภิกษุเหล่าใดผู้กีดกัน(อกุศลธรรม)ได้ด้วยหิริ มีสติ ประพฤติธรรมอยู่ทุกเมื่อ ถึงที่สุดแห่งทุกข์ ย่อมดำเนินไปอย่างสม่ำเสมอในที่ที่ไม่สม่ำเสมอ ภิกษุเหล่านั้นมีอยู่น้อย หิริสูตรที่ ๘ จบ @เชิงอรรถ : @ บท ในที่นี้หมายถึงอารมณ์หรืออิริยาบถ ผู้ติดขัดในทุกบท คือ ผู้ติดขัดอยู่ในอารมณ์หรืออิริยาบถที่จะ@เกิดกิเลส (สํ.ส.อ. ๑/๑๗/๓๖) @ ดู ขุ.ธ. ๒๕/๑๔๓/๔๒ @ ถึงที่สุดแห่งทุกข์ หมายถึงบรรลุนิพพานอันเป็นที่สุดแห่งวัฏฏทุกข์ (สํ.ส.อ. ๑/๑๘/๓๗)

ขีณาสวภิกษุพวกใด เป็นผู้เกียดกันอกุศลธรรมด้วยหิริ มีสติประพฤติอยู่ในกาลทั้งปวง ขีณาสวภิกษุพวกนั้นมีน้อย ขีณาสวภิกษุทั้งหลาย บรรลุนิพพานเป็นส่วนสุดแห่งทุกข์ แล้ว เมื่อสัตตนิกายประพฤติไม่เรียบร้อย ย่อมประพฤติ เรียบร้อย ฯ
