๒. อาตุมเถรคาถา ภาษิตของพระอาตุมเถระ ทราบว่า ท่านพระอาตุมเถระได้กล่าวคาถาไว้ดังนี้ว่า
|๒๐๙.๗๒| ๒ ยถา กลีโร สุสุ วฑฺฒิตคฺโค ทุนฺนิกฺขโส โหติ ปสาขชาโต เอวํ อหํ ภริยายานีตาย อนุมญฺญ มํ ปพฺพชิโตมฺหิทานีติ ฯ อาตุโม เถโร ฯ
หน่อไม้มียอดอันงอกงาม เจริญด้วยกิ่งก้านโดยรอบ ย่อมเป็นของที่ บุคคลขุดขึ้นได้โดยยาก ฉันใด เมื่อคุณแม่นำภรรยามาให้แก่ฉันแล้ว ถ้าฉันมีบุตรหรือธิดาขึ้น ก็ยากที่จะถอนตนขึ้นออกบวชได้ ฉันนั้น เพราะฉะนั้น ฉันจะบวชในบัดนี้.
ลำไผ่อ่อน แตกแขนง มีใบกิ่งก้านสาขาแล้ว เป็นสิ่งที่ยากที่จะเขยื้อนถอนได้ ฉันใด อาตมาก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน เมื่อโยมแม่นำภรรยามาให้ ขอโยมแม่ได้โปรดยินยอมอาตมาเถิด เพราะว่า บัดนี้ อาตมาเป็นบรรพชิตแล้ว
