ยถาปิ กีตา ปุริสสฺสุปาหนา สุขสฺส อตฺถาย ทุขํ อุทพฺพเห ฆมฺมาภิตตฺตา ตลสาว ปีฬิตา ตสฺเสว ปาเท ปุริสสฺส ขาทเร ฯ
รองเท้าที่คนซื้อมา เพื่อประโยชน์จะให้สบายเท้า กลับนำเอาความทุกข์ มาให้ รองเท้านั้น ถูกแดดเผาบ้าง ถูกพื้นเท้าครูดสีบ้าง ก็กลับกัดเท้า ของผู้นั้นนั่นแหละ ฉันใด.
เอวเมว โย ทุกฺกุลิโน อนริโย ตุมฺหากํ วิชฺชญฺจ สุตญฺจ อาทิย ตเมว โส ตตฺถ สุเตน ขาทติ อนริโย วุจฺจตุปาหนูปโมติ ฯ อุปาหนชาตกํ ปฐมํ ฯ ---------
ผู้ใด เกิดในตระกูลต่ำ ไม่ใช่อารยชน เรียนวิชาและศิลปะมาจากสำนัก อาจารย์ได้แล้ว ผู้นั้น ย่อมฆ่าตนเองด้วยศิลปะที่เรียนมาในสำนักของ อาจารย์นั้น ฉันนั้น บุคคลนั้น บัณฑิตเรียกว่า ไม่ใช่อารยชน เปรียบ ด้วยรองเท้าที่ทำไม่ดี ฉะนั้น. จบ อุปาหนชาดกที่ ๑.
