กึสุ ชเนติ ปุริสํ กึสุ ตสฺส วิธาวติ กึสุ สํสารมาปาทิ กึสุ ตสฺส มหพฺภยนฺติ ฯ
เทวดาทูลถามว่า อะไรหนอยังคนให้เกิด อะไรหนอของเขาย่อมวิ่งพล่าน อะไรหนอเวียนว่ายไปยังสงสาร อะไรหนอเป็นภัยใหญ่ ของเขา ฯ
เทวดาทูลถามว่า อะไรเล่าทำคนให้เกิด อะไรเล่าของคนนั้นย่อมพล่านไป อะไรเล่าเวียนว่ายในสงสาร อะไรเล่าเป็นภัยใหญ่ของคนนั้น พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสตอบว่า ตัณหาทำคนให้เกิด จิตของคนนั้นย่อมพล่านไป สัตว์เวียนว่ายในสงสาร ทุกข์เป็นภัยใหญ่ของคนนั้น ปฐมชนสูตรที่ ๕ จบ
