พระสุตตันตปิฎก ขุททกนิกาย เถรคาถา [๑. เอกกนิบาต] ๑. ปฐมวรรค ๔. ปุณณเถรคาถา ๒. มหาโกฏฐิตเถรคาถา ภาษิตของพระมหาโกฏฐิตเถระ ทราบว่า ท่านพระโกฏฐิตเถระได้กล่าวคาถาไว้ดังนี้ว่า
|๑๓๙.๒| ๒ อุปสนฺโต อุปรโต มนฺตภาณี อนุทฺธโต ธุนาติ ปาปเก ธมฺเม ทุมปตฺตํว มาลุโตติ ฯ อิตฺถํ สุทํ อายสฺมา มหาโกฏฺฐิโต เถโร คาถํ อภาสิตฺถ ฯ
ได้ยินว่า ท่านพระมหาโกฏฐิตเถระได้ภาษิตคาถานี้ไว้อย่างนี้ว่า บุคคล ผู้สงบ งดเว้นจากการทำความชั่วพูดด้วยปัญญา ไม่ฟุ้งซ่าน ย่อมกำจัดบาป ธรรมทั้งหลาย เหมือนลมพัดใบไม้ให้ร่วงหล่นไป ฉะนั้น.
ภิกษุสงบ งดเว้นจากการทำชั่ว พูดด้วยปัญญา ไม่ฟุ้งซ่าน ย่อมกำจัดบาปธรรมทั้งหลายได้เหมือนลมพัดใบไม้ให้ร่วงหล่นไป
