ราชบัณฑิตกิตติมศักดิ์ ได้แก่ บุคคลผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิซึ่งมีชื่อเสียงเกียรติคุณดีเด่น เป็นที่ประจักษ์ในประเภทวิชาสาขาใดสาขาหนึ่งที่อยู่ในหน้าที่ของราชบัณฑิตยสภาและได้ให้ความร่วมมือ ปฏิบัติงานทางวิชาการอันเป็นประโยชน์แก่กิจการของราชบัณฑิตยสภาซึ่งนายกรัฐมนตรีจะได้นำความ กราบบังคมทูลเพื่อทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้า ฯ แต่งตั้งเป็นราชบัณฑิตกิตติมศักดิ์โดยคำแนะนำของ ราชบัณฑิตยสภา
